Constituent of Balanced Diet

We all hear so much about balanced diet. Every second expert, doctor or dietician always keeps telling us that we should have a healthy diet. But what is actually a balanced diet? Do we really know about it? Most of us are always confused about this balanced diet funda.

We all try to follow it but lack of actual knowledge doesn’t allow us too. We usually think that a balanced diet means completely removing some types of food from our diet and consuming minimum food possible. But in actual this is a wrong concept A healthy diet doesn't mean surviving solely on bird food and just juices! The new approach to eating balanced diet means to eat a wide range of foods, including some of our favorites.

As no single food can offer all the calories and nutrients required by our body to stay healthy, it’s vital to eat a variety of foods to make a balanced diet. And moreover mealtimes should be a pleasure rather than a punishment. So it is fine to eat small amounts of our favorite foods from time to time.


A balanced diet actually means eating plenty of different foods from all main groups of foods i.e. proteins, starch, carbohydrates, fats along with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are very essential as they provide all required vitamins and minerals providing protection against health problems. They are rich fiber content thus help in maintain proper digestive system. Fruits and vegetables are complete source of nutrition.
Milk and dairy products
Milk and dairy products are rich in calcium and essential for bone health. Calcium also plays a vital role in nerve conduction and muscle contraction. Apart from this it also helps in the blood clotting process during bleeding. It is recommended that you should go for low fat dairy products than whole milk .
Protein rich food
Pulses, meat, poultry and fish are rich in proteins. Proteins being building block of our body are very essential. However, one should take care that proteins which are low in fat like pulses, low fat milk, , fish should be preferred over high saturated fatty acids.

Carbohydrates
It is a major food which is consumed more by all of us. It is high in fiber content and rich in energy. It is  packed with B complex vitamins and minerals needed for proper functioning of the body. This includes wheat, rice, ragi, bread, bajra, oats, potatoes, etc.

Fats
Some amount fat is necessary for body but always keep in mind that excess of fats is always bad. It is necessary since as it helps in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins and it is a source of energy. Always prefer unsaturated fats over saturated fats.

Sugar

This food group is often not needed as most of the energy is provided by other groups. Foods or drinks with high sugar content should only be consumed in moderation .Eating too much sugar can cause diseases like diabetes and can also lead to weight gain.
Junk Foods
junk foods, packed foods should be consumed very occasionally and cautiously as they are harmful for health.
